Vikings Draft - Stage 2

So working on up from the bottom of the seventh round I think the Vikings would benefit from going defensive line and wide receiver. That would create competition at some important areas while allowing for the remainder of the draft to bring in guys to strengthen other areas of the team.

As mentioned before, I'm completely ignoring the likelihood of Spielman making trades with some of the picks.

The two picks I want to speculate about today are number 198, from the sixth round and 160, from the fifth round.

I'll get to it just across the divide.

#198

Considering how the last few drafts have gone, I think that 198 would be a good opportunity to get another depth Cornerback. They went Waynes in the first last year and Rhodes in the first a couple years ago but beyond those two the list gets thin in a hurry. I still like Terence Newman, even though he's very old by NFL standards, and Munnerlyn has a place on the team but Sherels is best as the punt returner and who knows if Jabari Price will ever become anything.

In the air show division it's important to have quality depth at the Cornerback position and giving Zim another young guy to work with can only make the team stronger.

So d-line, receiver and corner at the bottom of the draft, all with the "best" players yet to come.

Now #160

I'm not super sold on the approach I'm about to take because it's not a weakness this year, but with the structure of contracts that could change again in a year so I think the fifth round would be a good place to add another offensive lineman. I don't have any special insights into how workouts or recovery from injuries have been going but know that Teddy needs to be able to stay upright. We also can't expect to have the fortune of having the same line start every game again next season.

So while I know it would bring the total number of offensive linemen to 15 on the team, that can get balanced out in camp and would allow for the best 7 or 8 to make the active roster, with another 1 or 2 on the practice squad.

The draft will be all wrapped up in four weeks so it's going to be a fun end of April in the Norseland!
