I've now completed the 7 round, 8 pick Vikings draft in 5 separate posts. Since I did the work to break it down that much I'm going to go a little further and do the work to bring it all together. In that exercise I went from the bottom to the top. I know that most of the attention goes to the first round so I'm going to lead off with that and if interested keep going and see the rest of the picks as I see them hopefully happening. For the top 3 rounds I'll give some alternative possibilities.
I'm keeping it brief here but if you want more of a deep take a look at the five previous posts.
Round 1 - #23 overall
Wide Receiver - Not another 5'10" slot guy or even a speedster but a 6'2"+ receiver to take the number 1 spot.
Alternatives
Lineman - The best one available, either offense or defense.
Linebacker - This is maybe the fourth spot of need on the team but am holding off on Safety until later
Round 2 - #54 overall
Quarterback - This isn't an indictment of Teddy but if one of the top 5 - 7 guys is still available at 54 it would be a good insurance policy and potential trade piece down the road. Even the Patriots drafted a QB in the second round a couple years ago and Brady is still amongst the gold standard of the position.
Alternatives
If round 2 is too high for a QB and they go Receiver in the first round then offensive line would be a good choice here.
If they go with a lineman in the first then the second should be a receiver.
Round 3 - #86 overall
Safety - It's time to find a guy to run next to the hit man. Could take a swing at it earlier but I don't know how good this group of safeties is and I don't want any reaches.
Alternative
If they don't go safety and haven't gone defensive line in the first 2 rounds then that could be a good time to address it.
Round 4 - #121 overall
Linebacker - After drafting linebackers high the last 2 years but still having a modest need for more, the middle of the draft would be a great time to grab another one.
Round 5 - #160 overall
Offensive lineman - There are plenty of guys on the roster that play the position but the contract situation for many of the players means it needs to be addressed in this draft.
Round 6 - #198 overall
Cornerback - We're in a solid position at this time but another year or 2 down the road and that may not be the case. Giving Zim time to coach up a raw talent is always a good plan.
Round 7 - #240 overall
Receiver - As previously stated, bringing in guys that are tall number 1 types is the goal. I can't justify 3 of them being drafted but wouldn't complain a lick if it happened. Hopefully a third gets brought in as a RFA.
Round 7 - #244 overall
Defensive lineman - The team's going to be built on defense and the line makes it all go so taking a flier on one could pay off down the road.
