Vikings Draft Day 2 reaction

I went in to the draft thinking that the Vikings should draft a QB in the second if one of the top 5 was still available. Well Connor Cook was, but they skipped on that. Not the worst thing since they want to build around Teddy but if not QB then Offensive line or maybe even Safety. It would make even more sense in real time since one of the top rated Safeties was still available when they selected.

But they went Cornerback.

A 5'10" corner who apparently didn't play too much in the slot. He went to Clemson and they've had a squad the last few years which is a testament to coaching but I don't like this pick.

Zimmer is a defensive guy and has had a history of working well with DB's but this is not a top need this year or even looking toward's next season.

When considering positional need and the spot at which he was chosen I'm giving it a C-.

Thankfully, Draft Friday night goes 2 rounds deep and I'll hit on the third round briefly.
When the draft clock hit pick 86 the Vikings made a trade.

Last night I was talking about the possibility of them trading down, out of the first round and was of the opinion that if they did it would hopefully be to compile some picks next year. It didn't happen in the first round but at 86 that's exactly what happened.

For number 86 the Dolphins gave up a sixth round pick this year in addition to a third and fourth pick next year. I like the trade, because of what they received not so much because it helps the team this year, cuz it really doesn't.

Connor Cook is still on the board and I would have liked that just as much at 86. An offensive lineman, defensive lineman or safety would also have been pleasant additions. Rick's gonna do stuff...things (Walking Dead reference for those of you who don't watch the best show on TV) and it's worked out well more often then it hasn't so we'll have to just wait and see how the rest of the picks go.

For the trade I'll give a B+.

On to Saturday!
